The year 2020 was difficult for the St. Petersburg travel industry, but the city remained a leading Russian travel destination, a spokesperson for the city Committee for tourism development told Saint-Petersburg TV Channel.
In active cooperation, the city authorities and the travel business have been able to offset the decline in the number of travelers and the amount of earnings.
St. Petersburg offered travelers new routes and implemented tourism promotion programmes, which allowed of bringing down the general downturn in the 2020 results to 70%.
The travel cashback programme implemented on the federal level also helped alleviate the negative effect of the pandemic. As a result, St. Petersburg rates the fifth in the overall booking cost rankings. St. Petersburg was one of the top 5 destinations Russian tourists chose to travel to this summer.
In 2020, St. Petersburg was awarded the Safe Travels Spb status, which confirms the high safety and hospitality level it offers. St. Petersburg was also the first to introduce large-scale support measures for travel industry.
