According to the tax service’s statistics, 60 thousand companies closed down in 2020 in St. Petersburg, while 30 thousand new business projects were launched.
Polina Zavarikhina lost her job during the pandemic and decided to start her own business with the help of My Business center that offers free consultations for small businesses. Saint-Petersburg TV Channel’s Milena Ikonnikova comes with details.
Not everyone will have the guts to start a business in the midst of pandemic-enforced restrictions. Polina Zavarikhina got registered as an individual entrepreneur and started making jewelry from painted mother of pearl.
In October 2020, she took part in an exhibition of folk arts and crafts exhibition held in the Peter and Paul Fortress co-organized by My Business center.
Polina Zavarikhina tells: ‘My husband and me had been getting an unemployment benefit for three months and were thinking about our future. An acquaintance of my mother’s told her about My Business center that helps craftsmen. I thought the idea was crazy, starting business when everything is closing down in the pandemic.’
My Business center provides access to an information and trading platform where entrepreneurs can post free ads about their products.
Polina Zavarikhina continues: ‘I make several photos, and add a description telling about the materials and techniques I used. The visual component is very important.’
Polina’s workshop is in her apartment. She has been painting on mother of pearl for several years already. All the things she makes are unique.
Polina Zavarikhina explains: ‘I decided to make jewelry adding natural stones to mother of pearl to make my products unique.’
Several months after she stared her business, Polina Zavarikhina is selling her jewelry to customers in different parts of Russia and hopes to enter the international market.
