Over 100 thousand people living in St. Petersburg are registered as unemployed, almost half of them get unemployment benefits, Dmitry Cherneiko, Chairman of the city Committee for labour and employment, told the media.
He said that the statistics allowed to detect a large number of people who were in the ‘grey’ labour market until March 1, 2020.
Dmitry Cherneiko, Chairman of the city Committee for labour and employment, explained: ‘Some 60 thousand people did not work before they were registered as unemployed. This is a huge figure and seems awful, but in fact two thirds of all those who were registered as unemployed had had no job for a long time before the 1st of March.’
As of mid-April, almost 16.5 thousand people were registered as unemployed in St. Petersburg. In May, their number made already 50 thousand.
