The XX National hotel awards ceremony was held in Moscow. This year, the new nomination, the Best city with over 1 million inhabitants for hotel business, was introduced.
St. Petersburg was recognized as the winner in the new nomination taking over Kazan and Yekaterinburg, a spokesperson for the city government told Saint-Petersburg TV Channel. The award confirms the hospitable atmosphere characteristic of St. Petersburg, Governor Alexander Beglov commented.
He noted that travelers come to St. Petersburg to get familiar with its rich cultural and historical legacy and see the new touristic attractions like the Lakhta Center skyscraper, the new football arena, and the Western High-Speed Diameter.
Tourism as an important driver of the city economy. In 2019, travelers spent 376.8 billion rubles (4.8 billion dollars) in St. Petersburg. The travel industry contributed 4.4% of the city’s GRP, Alexander Beglov emphasized.
