A memorial action dubbed White Cranes commemorating the Russian soldiers and officers killed in Afghanistan was held in the Serafimovskoe Cemetery in St. Petersburg on Monday.
Afghan veterans, relatives of the fallen soldiers, school and university students have been gathering at the monument to the internationalist soldiers for the tenth year bringing flowers and white paper cranes.
Andrey Gorshechnikov, Deputy of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, Afghan veteran, said: ‘Memory is the most important, it is the highest tribute we can pay to our older comrades. Thank God, our parents have taught us to respect the older generation. It is one of the secrets of our strength.’
The International White Cranes Day is celebrated on October 22 in memory of the soldiers who died on battlefields in all wars.
