The exhibition will last till November 14.

The Russian Museum in St. Petersburg has started a large-scale exhibition project titled ‘Artists and Art Collectors’. The museum will exhibit masterpieces that were donated to it and make the core of its collection.

More than a thousand and a half of works of art donated by emperors, art collectors, artists’ heirs and artists themselves will be displayed in four buildings of the museum, in the Mikhailovsky Palace, the Benois Wing, the Stroganov Palace and the Marble Palace.

Vladimir Gusev, Director of the Russian Museum, said: ‘The history of the Russian Museum is different from that of other museums. It does not mean that we are better, but the collection of the Russian Museum reflects the history of Russia.’

The very first set of exhibits was donated to the museum by Emperor Nicholas II. Count Dmitry Tolstoy, the famous painters Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov also contributed to its collection.

The Russian Museum also received many works of art from relatives of artists. Thus, Kazimir Malevich’s works were donated by his widow, and Pavel Filonov’s paintings by his sister.

The exhibition will last till November 14.
