St. Petersburg’s medics report first success in using plasma therapy to treat COVID-19 patients, a spokesperson for the city Committee for healthcare told Saint-Petersburg TV Channel.
During the past week, three patients with in severe COVID-19 condition received plasma transfusion in City Hospital No 40. All of them got better.
The first patient to get plasma transfusion felt better the next day after the manipulation, and could leave the resuscitation ward two days later. Another patient was transferred from the resuscitation ward to a standard ward on Thursday, the third one is also recovering.
The first two patients who were given plasma transfusion are doctors of the hospital. They developed a severe condition and were being prepared for lung ventilation, Yevgeny Garbuzov, chief doctor of City Hospital No 40, told.
He said that hospitals received plasma ready to use from the city blood transfusion station.
‘Hyperimmune plasma therapy demonstrates good results. We will continue choosing plasma donors among people who recovered from COVID-19’, Yevgeny Garbuzov added.
According to St. Petersburg against COVID-19 Telegram channel, 8,945 people got infected with COVID-19 in St. Petersburg, 1,899 of them have recovered, 69 people died.
