The research platform called “Severny Polyus” (‘North Pole’) could set sail for the first expedition in 2022.
St. Petersburg’s Admiralty Shipyards are building the world’s first ice-strengthened self-propelled platform “Severny Polyus” (‘North Pole’) to be deployed for research projects for decades ahead.
According to Alexander Makarov, Managing Director of the Admiralty Shipyards, the first generation station could set sail for the first expedition in 2022.
The platform will be integrated into an observatory network to create a space distributed observatory operating under a single programme.
The platform will allow to significantly improve the quality of research. It will have onboard laboratories enabling analyzing water and snow samples on board.
