Innovative trams could start running the streets of the city in 5-7 years.
St. Petersburg’s Oktyabrsky Electric Car Repair Plant has manufactured the first unmanned robotic tram. While Europe is just planning developing such trams, St. Petersburg tested a prototype two years ago.
‘It is not just a fashionable trend. It improves the safety of passengers and pedestrians,’ City+ quotes Felix Vinokur, President of Transport Systems Co, as saying.
Experts believe unmanned trams could start running the streets of St. Petersburg in 5-7 years.
The robotized tram steering system chooses the optimal speed in every individual road situation. The system operates in accordance with the traffic rules maintaining road safety and avoiding collisions.
The road infrastructure in St. Petersburg is being upgraded for unmanned trams with new smart traffic lights, traffic regulation systems and 5G network being implemented.
