The earth and wooden wall discovered when renovating the Menshikov Bastion prevents restauration works.
The Menshikov Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress could deteriorate, reports TASS quoting the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg.
The restauration of the bastion started in 2010-2011. In the process, in 2018, archeologists discovered fragments of an earth and wooden wall built in 1703.
The discovery made the initial restauration plan impossible as renovation can damage the archeological find. It is impossible to continue with waterproofing without dismantling part of the earth and wooden wall, and it is impossible to dismantle the wall because it is an archeological object.
As a result, the brick walls of the Menshikov Bastion are deteriorating without waterproofing, and the city could loose both the Bastion and the earth and wooden wall, which is considered to be the first object built in St. Petersburg.
Archeologists and museum specialists should cooperate to work out a solution, according to the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg.
