A worker dismantling the SKK sports complex died as the roof and 80% of the building collapsed. The accident happed on Friday.
According to Andrey Litovka, head of the press office of the St. Petersburg directorate of the Ministry of Emergencies, a team of four was dismantling the roof when the building collapsed. Three of the workers survived and are well, one man was found dead under the debris.
It will be the task of the investigation to find out why 29-year-old Matvey Kucherov was on the roof when it collapsed. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov who was in Moscow on Friday gave instructions to help the parents of the victim and investigate the case thoroughly.
Igor Zabiran, Managing Director of the contractor, promised the company will provide help to the family of Matvey Kucherov, too.
On Saturday, St. Petersburg people came to the SKK bringing flowers and lighting candles. Meanwhile, Ministry of Emergency specialists were clearing the debris. 138 people and 40 machines were deployed.
According to Alexey Anikin, Head of the St. Petersburg directorate of the Ministry of Emergencies, there is no danger that other structures will collapse.
The building was in a bad condition and could collapse earlier. Alexander Bastrykin, Head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, has initiated criminal proceedings on the case.
Some 28 square meters of the building, the roof and facades of the SKK collapsed. The old building was to be dismantled in order to build a new ice arena, the largest in the world, on the site.
