The ceremony is scheduled for May 24, the birthday of the poet.
The museum of the poet Iosif Brodsky in St. Petersburg is getting ready for opening. The museum occupies a former ‘communal’ flat, where several families lived. Attempts to create a memorial space dedicated to the poet were made as far back as in the past century, but only recently it became possible to buy all the rooms from their owners.
Now the flat where Brodsky lived until 1972 will become a museum and a tourist attraction. Visitors will see the authentic interior and the original parquet floor that was there when the poet was a tenant of the flat.
The official opening ceremony is scheduled on the birthday of Iosif Brodsky on May 24. But the museum will start accepting visitors in a test mode even earlier, in February. It will offer excursions, and later, an art center for artists, poets, and local historians will be established there.
According to Anna Bedrina, deputy director of the Iosif Brodsky museum foundation, even if not all renovation works are completed by May 24, the museum will be inaugurated, and the possible deficiencies, if any, will add the place an authentic communal flat air.
