Janne Laine, the Mayor of Savonlinna in Finland, has suggested uniting Southeast Finland, St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. According to Yle, the idea was discussed at the meeting of St. Petersburg and Finnish cities municipal authorities held in St. Petersburg on Friday.
Laine believes that establishing a special economic zone will promote the movement of people, capital and services. The special economic zone could be created in the framework of the Business Growth and Innovation Corridor SPB-SEF project.
The project could get EU funding amounting to some 70-80 million euro.
