29 years ago, on February 23, 1991, nine firefighters and a policeman died fighting the blaze in the Leningrad Hotel. Their monument in the Serafimovskoe Cemetery has an inscription ‘For the sake of life on the earth’.
59 firemen died on duty in Russia since 1948. On Sunday, a memorial service was held and a minute of silence was observed to commemorate them.
