On February 19 a ceremony to commemorate Anatoly Sobchak, the first mayor of St. Petersburg who died 20 years ago, was held. President Vladimir Putin attended the event laying flowers to the monument to Sobchak on Vasilievsky Island.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov took part in the ceremony together with Senator Lyudmila Narusova, the widow of Sobchak, and his daughter Xenia Sobchak, a TV host.
The President also attended a concert dedicated to Anatoly Sobchak in the St. Petersburg Philharmony.
Anatoly Sobchak was the first mayor of St. Petersburg during 1991-1996, and it was under his government that the city regained its historic name after being called Leningrad for many decades.
