Some parents choose quite exotic names for their children.
St. Petersburg parents tend to be creative when choosing names for their children. Last year, a St. Petersburg family called their boy Poseidon after the god of seas in the ancient Greek mythology.
Another rare name registered was Porfiry, the boy will be a namesake of the detective from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”.
Girls are given old Russian and Slavic names like Matryona and Milorada more frequently.
Still, such exotic names are an exclusion. According to the Single Registry of civil status statistics, the most popular names in 2019 were Alexander, Ivan, and Mikhail for boys and Victoria, Anna, and Maria for girls.
