Laser can also be used to clean monuments.
State of the art laser technologies allow of creating high-precision copies of monuments, which makes it possible to restore damaged or lost objects, Peterburgsky Dnevnik daily reports quoting Vadim Parfyonov, professor of St. Petersburg’s LETI Electrotechnical University.
According to the researcher, laser fixation allows of assessing the damage to the monument conditioned by external factors. For that purpose, an electronic database and an archive of precise monument parameters are created. Should a part of a monument be lost, 3D scanning methods make it possible to restore the object.
Besides, laser is used to clean monuments, it is a good alternative to mechanic and chemical methods as dirt is removed in a most delicate way. ‘A laser beam can be applied selectively evaporating the dirt’, explains Vadim Partfyonov.
