Dmitry Peskov, Special Presidential Representative on Digital and Technological Development, told about the plans to develop next generation communication.
The next generation 5G mobile telephony is to become operable in St. Petersburg by 2022, reports Fontanka web portal quoting Dmitry Peskov, Special Presidential Representative on Digital and Technological Development.
According to Dmitry Peskov, the transfer to the new format will be more complicated than launching a Mars mission. During the three years to come, the new generation network is to be set up in different regions of Russian.
At present, cell phones operate in the 4G environment. Switching to the 5G standard will mean better connection, quicker data transfer and lower phone battery power consumption.
Channel Saint-Petersburg has earlier reported about launching a 5G pilot in Kronstadt. For the time being, this network is considered pre-commercial and is available to a limited number of users only.
According to a recent report by Kommersant, 5G network test zones could also be launched in Tsarskoe Selo and near the A.S.Popov Central Museum of Communications. During the Euro 2020 matches, 5G could be also available at Gazprom Arena.
