At the gala concert on November 16, the students will dance the one-cat ballet “Musaget”.
On November 16, the Children’s Theatre will be inaugurated in the Boris Eifman Dance Academy in St. Petersburg. The Academy is a unique educational institution that combines general education with ballet training.
The students are now rehearsing their performance, which they will present at the gala concert on November 16 to mark the opening of the Boris Eifman Children’s Theatre. It is the one-cat ballet “Musaget” which Boris Eifman, the founder of the Academy, staged for New York City Ballet more than 10 years ago.
Boris Eifman, artistic director of the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre and of the Boris Eifman Dance Academy, says that the objective is to create repertory theatre. Usually, ballet schools show concerts with different programmes every year. The Children’s Theatre will stage performances that will be constantly on its bill.
For the near future, it is planned to stage “La Sylphide” and “Pinocchio”. The Children’s Theatre has all it takes to call it a proper theatre, even dressing rooms for the students to get ready before they go on stage.
Miroslava Nazarova, a student of the Academy, says they are rehearsing every day before the gala concert.
Igor Klinsky, another student, believes it is a benefit that the Academy combines school classes with training rooms. Though, sometimes it is hard to stop thinking about ballet pas in the algebra class, he admits.
At present, there are 300 students in the Academy. After the theatre is officially inaugurated, the Academy intends to enroll more talented children so there will be 500 students.
The 500-seat theatre can be used not only for the Ballet Academy performances, but also for city festivals and new ballet projects.
