The operation was a success.
A master class demonstrating removal of malignant lever tumour was held in the St. Petersburg Oncological Center. A surgeon from the Samara Oblast Clinical Oncological Dispensary operated.
With an X-ray control, the surgeon inserted into the patient’s leg artery a catheter which moved to reach the blood vessel that feeds the malignant tumor. After that a special chemotherapy drug was injected into the affected area.
The manipulation was done with local anesthesia, the patients was conscious. The operation was a success.
Professor Vladimir Moiseenko, Doctor of Medicine, Director of the Oncological Center, said that until recently the most efficient method of fighting lever cancer was considered surgery.
The new state of the art method allows to cut the tumor from the bloodstream system and saturate it with drugs under high pressure thus providing a maximum therapeutic effect with a minimal impact on the healthy lever tissues.
In Russia this technology called balloon-occlusive trans-arterial chemo-embolization was registered some 18 months ago.
