The Plague Fort is one of the most famous and the most mysterious forts in Kronstadt. The web portal of Channel Saint-Petersburg tells why it is called so and what is so attractive about it.
Architect Irina Starodubtseva tells that back in the 70-ies she and her friends would go by boat to the Kronstadt forts to see what is so special about them. The first impression of the Plague Fort, also called Alexander the First Fort, was rather oppressive, with its heavy monumental walls striking with their grandeur and mysteriousness.
Inside, in the low-vaulted enfilades, the atmosphere was not exactly mystic, but somewhat supernatural, as if something was happening there.
What really was happening there is that due to a threat of a plague epidemic the first in Russia laboratory that made anti-plague vaccine was established in the fort at the end of the 19th century. And it is the heroism of doctors that saved millions of people sacrificing their own lives that gave the fort its second name, the Plague Fort.
