Alexander Beglov assumes office of St. Petersburg Governor


According to the rules, the Governor-elect assumes the office on the seventh day after the official publication of the election results.


Alexander Beglov has assumed the office of the Governor of St. Petersburg.

The swearing ceremony took place on September 18 in the Mariinsky Palace. Deputies of the city’s Legislative Assembly, judges of the Statutory Court and honorary citizens of St. Petersburg attended.

According to the rules, the Governor-elect assumes the office on the seventh day after the official publication of the election results.

Alexander Beglov was elected Governor on September 8, getting 64.43% of the ballots cast.

The Governor-elect was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1956. After graduating from a teacher training college and serving in the Army he came to Leningrad and became a student of the Leningrad Engineering and Economic Institute.

After graduation Alexander Beglov started working in the Leningrad Executive Committee, as the city administration was then called, heading the construction and development department. He was involved in building treatment facilities and supervised housing construction projects in Kupchino, Rybatskoe and Dolgoe Lake districts of the city.

Returning to the university, he defended a thesis in construction engineering attaining a Candidate of Sciences degree.

As a politician, Alexander Beglov started his career in 1999 in St. Petersburg as Head of the Kurortny District administration. In 2003, he served as an interim Governor of St. Petersburg for three months after Governor Vladimir Yakovlev resigned.

After that Alexander Beglov moved to Moscow where he served as Head of the Control Department under the President of Russia where he was responsible for controlling the federal treasury and preventing fraud schemes.

In 2008 Alexander Beglov was appointed Deputy Head of the Presidential Executive Office, and in 2012 became Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Southern Federal District to return to St. Petersburg five years later as Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North-Western Federal District.

On October 3, 2018, Alexander Beglov was appointed Acting Governor of St. Petersburg by President Vladimir Putin.
