Several new opera performances will be staged.
Saint-Petersburg Opera Theatre is opening its new, 33rd season with Eugene Onegin.
This season the theatre will stage several new operas, including The Vampire by Heinrich Marschner and Elektra by Richard Strauss.
The company is also rehearsing Esmeralda by Alexander Dargomyzhsky, an opera that is performed quite rarely in Russia. The first night is scheduled on December 14.
According to Yuriy Alexandrov, artistic director of Saint-Petersburg Opera, this opera has much in common with the genre of romance, as Dargomyzhsky was a romance composer, and the opera has some of the ingredients that make up a traditional Russian romance – drama, blood, villains, and death.
Saint-Petersburg Opera has also announced the International chamber opera festival to start on September 29 in which companies representing the Central Macedonia Greek Cultural Center, the Hungarian Opera, the Astana Opera, and the Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theatre will perform.
