You beauty! I had such a great fun! The way he took him for ride is just awesome – so tidy and accurate!

Almost every single one of us has been to an airport at least once. Huge passenger traffic, the quickest and statistically safest transport, the most complex transportation system. But for Yuriy Abroskin all this movement of the people and machinery is an everyday thing.

I don’t see any problems that could hamper our work today. Any questions or work-related suggestions, colleagues? If there’s none – then I wish you all a good shift, with no incidents. Let’s get to work places.

Deputy general director of Pulkovo airport. The work which Yuriy Abroskin is doing is operative management of the airport.

Andrey Drobovich, director of operative management center at Pulkovo airport: “These are the people who clearly understand the whole spectrum of technical and technological procedures, so that a plane takes off fully loaded. Safely and on schedule. He’s responsible for everything happening at the airport – day and night.

There are four deputy general directors on shift at Pulkovo. The work day lasts for 12 hours – from 8 am to 8 pm. The next shift, naturally, is from 8pm to 8am. Yuriy Abroskin is in charge of 700 people. Certainly it's impossible to track the work of every employee, but the last signature on different documents always belongs to a deputy general director on shift.

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “We call them prosecutors documents or prosecutors signatures. What does that mean? When you put the signature or if this document is not fulfilled, you are going straight to the prosecutor’s office. Meaning you are entering the realm of criminal responsibility.

While a plane is in mid-air, RosAviation is responsible for it – courtesy of the dispatcher headquarters of an airport. It is from here that aircraft are being directed to landing and given permission to take off. But as soon as the plane is on the ground, it's immediately under the control of the airport. Passengers, luggage, refueling, technical works and works with pilots - in general the whole servicing cycle of an aircraft from parking to taking off.

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “Airport is a teamwork. If something is wrong, you can immediately see it and have to solve the problem. We start understanding why this happened - because a man in any case, if he's part of the team must be part of the team, and follow the rules which we have.

Murmansk, come one!

The control over the Pulkovo situation is made from the center of operative management of the airport.

What do you have? Tell me – is it all red?

Delayed flights. All in one minute. Means its all red.

Also red, as I can see.

No, we’re good – all on schedule, it seems.

If there's any nonstandard situation, it must be resolved fast - so that the flow of passengers is not affected.

Time is not displayed

All is broken

You too? Everyone has this problem?

Yes, everyone

When?

Literally 3 minutes ago

Zhenya, please put the break-off time on the log.

Ask your people, because Audibi and here and in terminal too. Yes, please, ok

Work restored!

Restored? 56 minutes?

Yes, lets begin working

Yup, ok

Helicopter pilot and then pilot at civic aviation. 3000 flight hours. Yuriy Abroskin finished his flight career in mid-1990s due to health issues, but he decided to stick with aviation.

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “Flying is very interesting, but I would not say this is something that would make you worried or concerned if you don't have it at a particular moment.

He was flying out of Yakutsk, and that's where he began his work in the local airport.

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “I was the head of the dispatcher service and also a shift deputy director of the airport in Yakutsk”

At the end of 1990s he got a job offer in Pulkovo and moved to St. Petersburg

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “I was tired of winter, was tired of frosty weather. Just tired of the cold”

I went to a store bought a pair of jeans and - well you cannot wear jeans without a belt - so I started looking for a belt. Having searched all shops and markets, I realized I didn't like anything and then I asked myself well maybe I should do a belt myself.

The quickest one can produce a belt is eight minutes. In three years that Yuriy Abroskin has been doing this, he has made over 50 – and in most of the cases, the materials he has been using were absolutely exclusive and self-made

During long winter hours my wife is knitting and I am making belts. I can do it and see that people like my products - you can immediately see by a man whether he likes it or not.

Leningrad airport takes and sends up to 120 planes every day. It's becoming crowded in the walls of the old airport. Leningrad’s architects designed a blueprint of a new three-story building with underground tunnels- airport will be able to service up to 2000 passengers an hour.

In 1973, the Shosseiny airport was replaced by a new terminal Pulkovo-1. Five tall lights, the famous cups formed one of Leningrad’s symbols. The building, without exaggeration, became the pride of Soviet Union

This is how the airport looks today - the Leningrad Medal of the October Revolution Pulkovo airport. From the air gates of Leningrad, it's not far to the most distant parts

Today flights go even further. 151 destinations, it is able to take 18 million passengers a year. Centralized Pulkovo terminal includes a new building, as well as Pulkovo-one. The modern St. Petersburg airport has been working at full capacity since February 2015.

Andrea Pal – original

The new Pulkovo has high level of safety in terminals and the two runways. The airport can make 36 takeoffs and landings every hour

Andrey Drobovich, director of operative management center at Pulkovo airport: “Pulkovo is the only airport in the Russian Federation which has a program providing safety on the runway - so that there would be no incidents there. That includes unsanctioned traffic on the runway, as well as control of the runway’s condition. This is the equipment which was installed to regulate aircraft right on the runway.

Please allow to stay for a while on Alfa-4

Permission granted, you can stay for a while on Alfa-4

Roger that

Our task is to make sure visually that the runway both for takeoff and landing is in good condition. This is ideal condition - when there are no works on it, all has been completed. Ideal condition, just like now – quiet, calm and almost dry.

Andrea Pal, deputy general director on finances at “Vozdyshnye Vorota Severnoy Stolitsy”: “We have more space to park this business jets when we have big events. And this year I think is the first time when we stopped using the old runway to park the jets there. In any case. We are a very large airport and the fact that we have in one-two days a little bit more movements… It’s something we can really manage.

Governmental jets - the so-called VIP - are serviced upon a special program. And the first person to receive delegations at Pulkovo is deputy general director.

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “During my work, I have seen probably all leaders of states – presidents, kings, princes. I have not only seen the Pope - because he has not come to St. Petersburg yet.

The new terminal itself is 170,000 m² with 88 check-in desks, 110 passport control booths, 65 cafés and shops. The number of gates has been increased dramatically - there are 37 today.

Andrey Drobovich, director of operative management center at Pulkovo airport: “According to domestic and foreign specialists, we correspond with the demands made towards our airport – safety of flights, regularity and the culture of service - the three fundamentals of civic aviation.

Andrea Pal, deputy general director on finances at “Vozdyshnye Vorota Severnoy Stolitsy”: “It is one of the largest… No, it’s no «one of the», it is the largest achievement that I have in my professional career. And I’m very proud of it every single day when I’m sitting at my desk and I look to this wonderful building I’m proud and happy to be part of it”

Almost 20 years at Pulkovo. Yuriy Abroskin knows the airport through and through. And the best phrase he can hear from the co-workers or pilots coming to St. Petersburg is “we are doing great”. Because if the personnel are calm, it means passengers will be calm as well.

Have a nice flight! See you later

Business trips or vacations, flying in to see friends or coming home. An airport is always the beginning of something new. New emotions or, maybe, a new life. What will it be like tomorrow - it's up for us to decide. We are building our city, every single one of us is building St. Petersburg

Yuriy Abroskin, deputy general director on shift at Pulkovo airport: “Sometimes it's hot, sometimes very hot. Today, I’d say, is a relatively calm day. Nothing special. I did not even recharge my phone once
