The Christmas service took place at the Kazanksiy Cathedral. It was led by the metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Varsonofiy.
Christmas at the Kazanskiy Cathedral was celebrated by more than a thousand people, including St. Petersburg’s governor Georgiy Poltavchenko.
It is a custom in the Russian Orthodox Church, that the solemn night ceremonial services held twice a year – at Christmas and Easter – are the best way to deeply understand the spiritual power.
Christmas is the most important Orthodox Christian holiday, it reminds believers of Christ’s birth to the face of the Earth, which paved way to the new Era.
Sergey Martynov, member of the clergy: “Just to touch upon, to understand that the man who helped us, who saved us was born. Some people confess, some take communion, some try to understand the church and feel the unity of the people during these holidays”
Festive service took place took place during the night at more than 30 thousand temples of the Russian Orthodox Church worldwide. On January 7th, Georgia, Serbian and Jerusalem Orthodox church are also celebrating Christmas.
