Young pupils take the place of their great grandmothers and grandfathers. Every each one of them is continuing their family’s history. A particular name to a collective heroic deed of those who defended their motherland. This memory was restored by bits, thanks to archived photographs.
Led by the Honorary Guard unit, a battalion of machine gunners and an orchestra, “the immortal regiment” set off down the Kamennoostrovskiy avenue. Traffic was suspended, but it also seemed that time stood still too. Heroes of the war returned into St. Petersburg’s streets through yellow-ish photos.
The “immortal regiment” stretched into kilometers. Almost 5 thousand people marched through the streets carrying photos of their ancestors. Veterans who honorary led the march admitted – they hadn’t expected that remembrance would resurrect their brothers and sisters in arms.
The “immortal regiment” gathered together at the square near the Music Hall. Heroes of the War – who had never met each other – were looking at one another from the photographs. They united thousands today. And its just the beginning – on Victory Day the remembrance event will make an entire army come alive.
Dmitriy Runkov, reporter: “The eternal regiment – resurrected at the Petrogradskiy area – will become part of a city-wide march on May 9th. It will follow veterans from the Vosstaniya square to the Dvortsovaya square. Such events will be held in almost all cities of the former USSR, reviving memories of those who defended their motherland”
